This was probably one of the most popular races of the club summer series so far! With a turnout of almost 20 Striders on a warm summer evening at the Memorial Park in Coventry, we managed to scoop most of the prizes too!
Both the women's team (Carolyn, Dawn, Nadine) and the men's team (Mike, Stuart, Chris McCarthy, Trevor) took 1st places, rewarded by a bottle of wine each, and further prizes went to Mike for 5th place overall, Stuart for 1st M40vet, Vicki for 1st F45vet, Carolyn for 1st F35vet and Dawn for 4th FS.
The course was a small lap followed by 2 large laps of the park, and was deceivingly undulating (well I thought it was anyway...), with the last mile proving quite tough as the mile 4 marker came half way up the hill, putting an end to my plans of a super speedy last mile! At this point the unmistakable sound of John McNally was behind me, and I was unable to hold on to him as he finished about 25seconds ahead of me in the end.
I finished only about 15seconds than my PB (from Harborough, a few weeks ago) with which I was satisfied, particularly as I had paced this one on my own!
Probably the highlight of the evening were the free cakes (oh yes...) at the finish, of which there were way more than the whole field could realistically eat. They shall remain nameless, but I know that a few Striders' bags were filled with cakes for tomorrow's packed lunches...
