Spa Striders departed en masse to Wales over the week-end. Strider’s Ladies took part in the 2 day Welsh Castles relay starting at Caernarvon Castle on Saturday morning and finishing 20 legs and over 200 miles later at Cardiff Castle on Sunday afternoon. The girls finished in 5th place in the Ladies section, no mean feat with 8 runners making their debuts in the event. Excellent performances in particular came from debutant Melissa Venables and Dawn Clarke, both grabbing 2nd place ladies places in their races and Jo Hawkins and Esther Wollaston on two gruelling mountain legs. Not to be outdone, 4 Striders also took on a half-ironman Triathlon (2K lake swim, 85K Snowdonia cycle and half-marathon run) at Bala near Wrexham. Tony Holt led them home in 5.12.00 with Jill Ibberson just 1 minute behind followed by Rich Sykes in 5.24.00 and Bethan Gwynn 5:30:00.
At the Banbury 5, the 6th race in the East Midlands Grand Prix series, Mike Ellis came home in 14th place in 28.28 followed by Trevor Wilkinson 30:39, Carolyn Wilkinson 32:02, (2nd F40), Clare Hinton 35:26 (PB), Michelle Clements 36.47, Jackie Lindsay 37:18 and Dave Lindsay 38:51. Nick Hargrave posted another PB of 20:00 in the latest Coventry Parks Runs 5K as did Steve Atherton further afield at the BUPA 10K in London with a time of 54.48.
