Well, my first marathon and its the hottest day on record in May in Edinburgh, typical !! The half marathon started at a sensible 8:00 but the full marathon kicked off at 9:50 with a reported 14,000 runners. The first 5 miles or so snakes around the city centre but then its out to the coast road for a really scenic route - two problems though, no shade and you could see where you were going for miles ahead which I found challenging !
The race boasts the quickest UK Marathon with a 40m elevation drop and it did deem largely flat but no records were going to be broken in temperatures hitting 77/25 degrees and no coastal breeze to save us.
The race was really well organised in my view, lots and lots of water and power drinks, great support including buckets of water and hose pipes and a dashing t shirt in the goodie bag.
I was aiming to break 3:45 but the heat got to me and I limped in at a respectable first marathon time of 4:02 - however, undeterred I've got the bug and will run another one next year.
On a personal note, I couldnt have got the start line, never mind the finishing line without the support of the club in general and the Saturday Crazies in particular, huge thanks to you all.
Bizarre isnt it, when I look back, i started training in the dark and in the snow and ended up running in near tropical heat.
One tip though, apply sun tan lotion - I didnt and my sun burn hurts more than my legs !!
