OK everyone. Here is my take on Paris 2010. In a nutshell: - The course itself is flat and fast
- Paris looked lovely in the spring sunshine
- Metro prices put London tube to shame; you can pretend you are Jason Bourne to boot
- Fantastic coffee everywhere
- Parisians much friendlier than I had remembered
An interesting restaurant afterwards in Montparnasse. All worked out well apart from big mix up with the bill at the end. Much competent and not-so-competent French later it turned out to be ... my fault! There was, of course, a race to consider: My experience was very good. Others were more critical. Friendly supporters, but not so much name calling as other big city marathons. Drinks stations chaotic, with wild swerving and banana skins a-plenty. Much debris on the ground to negotiate over the first mile. Lots of music and cheering. One drinks station had wine, another cider. Hmm. My top tips: - Run faster
- Turn off auto pause on your Garmin, otherwise you will be under the false impression that you are going to meet your target time
- Get to your starting pen early, unless you don't mind pushing your way in (or climbing the barrier and ripping your shorts)
- If your pace marker leaves you for dead, you need to run faster
- Before the race, don't get off at the metro station they tell you, but at the next stop, unless you like walking for about a mile before the start
- Take your own porridge (thanks Michelle)
- Resist that sugar craving and don't eat too many oranges at the end (I ate 6 and keeled over with stomach cramps)
- Give up all hope of meeting up afterwards in the non-existent space near the S for Striders sign (in London you get a whole tree; in Paris, a cobble or two)
All in all - a lovely break. To be recommended... you can't argue with 6 PBs. Nick
