A perfectly balanced contingent of 14 Striders (7 ladies, 7 men) ventured north on a misty Sunday morning to the historic town of Ashby de la Zouch.
This was the last race in the Winter Series, a gently undulating 20 miles around the Leicestershire countryside.
Some came in preparation for the London marathon, to gauge their pace and imagine what another 6.2 miles would feel like. Race series points, or the challenge of running 20 miles for a cheese roll and a banana was all the incentive needed by others.
As the runners headed to the start, feeling a little chilly and holding on to bin liners (Nick Adams) and foil blankets (Richard Brangwin), the sun broke through and would stay with us for the rest of the day.
All fourteen completed the race safely, and the ladies came away with 2nd team prize (Carolyn, Esther and Michelle). Carolyn also netted 5th lady, 3rd Vet 35 and a new club record of 2.17.
Biggest smiles of the day went to Nick and Hayley as they finished – photos will be on the website once I get to load them. Most relieved runner was Richard Bicknall, who managed to beat the gorilla despite falling behind in the first mile.
Another fantastic Striders turnout to round off the winter races. Roll on the Summer series (once the small matter of Paris and London are done and dusted).
