Although primarily a running club, Spa Striders also has many members who take part in triathlons. The whole range of triathlon distances, from pool based sprint triathlons to full Ironman races, are competed in by various members of the club so if you are already competing in triathlons or would like to try one there is plenty of experience and advice available. At the moment there are no formal triathlon training sessions in the club, but if enough people were keen we could probably arrange a few. Triathlon Basics Triathlons consist of a swim, followed by a cycle and finally a run. There are various different distances involved but the categories are:
- Sprint Triathlon. The shortest triathlon distance with a pool based swim of 400 m (or an open water swim of 750 m), followed by a cycle of 20-25 km and a 5 km run
- Olympic Distance. An 1500 m swim (usually open water), followed by a 40 km cycle and a 10 km run
- Half Ironman. A 1.2 mile open water swim, with a 56 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile run
- Full Ironman. The toughest triathlon with a 2.4 mile open water swim, 112 mile cycle and a 26.2 mile marathon to finish.
The equipment you need for a triathlon will depend on how seriously you want to take it. In the sprint triathlons many people will use their mountain bike, but obviously a decent road bike will be much faster and waste less energy. Other equipment such as tri-suits, which allow you to swim cycle and run without changing, are also available and save a lot of time in transition between the different parts of the race. However, if you just fancy trying a triathlon then the minimum kit for a pool based sprint would be;
- Swimming costume & goggles
- T-shirt & shorts
- Bike & Helmet
- Running Shoes
