Bramley 20 Race Report February 14th saw one of the first 20mile races of the marathon season (also incorporating a 10mile race). You might remember reading my report of Cardiff Half Marathon where Mike and I discovered pizza was a successful pre-race dinner. So we were delighted to discover another restaurant from the same chain as the one in Cardiff, also located in Reading. To find out if this worked again, read on… A chilly wintry day saw 8 Striders on the start line, all in training for either the London or the Paris Marathon. The course was a predominantly flat 2 laps, but a couple of cheeky hills thrown in for variety – although nothing too difficult, they certainly seemed bigger on the 2nd lap! My strict race plan (like Cardiff Half) was NOT to set out too fast, and to try to run at my predicted marathon pace of around 7.25 a mile, increasing the pace after halfway if I felt comfortable. This worked a treat, and I even chatted to a fellow runner for a good few miles. Judging by the official race photos, Helen Tudge (in her 20mile race debut) also delighted in a little chin wag with people running alongside her! Comfortably on target, I decided not to be too cocky come the 2nd lap, so kept along at a similar pace. However, at about mile 13, seeing John McNally up ahead I decided he needed to be caught! There were also a couple of women in my sights, who naturally also needed overtaking to move me up in the women’s placings. This increase in speed definitely started to make things harder, but I managed to overtake all those women, and even in the last mile I overtook a woman who I discovered from the results was a Vet55 category! I hope I can still run like her in 20+ years time! Have a look at the official results on our Race Results section, but in brief there were plenty of PBs in this race, including my own (taking 2mins off my 2 year old PB!). Mike did a superb run, placing highly and breaking the 2 hour barrier, which was his target. Richard Brangwin was another who knocked a significant amount (possibly almost 15minutes?) off his PB to sneak in in under 2hr15. So there is your answer - Pizzas are for PBs!
