For the 3rd time this year Mike and I ventured over the border...earlier in the year it was the Welsh Castles for me, then Race the Train in August, and this time to the capital, for what was welcomed by me - a flat half marathon!
They don't come much flatter than this either. We had a tasty pre-race pizza at Zero Degrees, which is also a micro-brewery! If you thought all the best runners abstain, then you might be interested to hear that maybe a sneaky half of dark ale also helped Mike along with his flying performance...
Race day was chilly, so donned in our bin bags we headed round the corner from our hotel to the Runners' Village. There was a good buzz, with almost 9000 people running. Mike had somehow got himself a number on a purple background, which meant he was in the elite pen at the front. I got in fairly close behind, and at 9am we were off. I stuck to my plan of starting off slower than I normally do, rather than going off like a crazed loon and burning out before half way! This plan worked, and up until about 9miles I held 6:57-7:04 pace, when I dropped off slightly but still crossed the line at 1:33.15, only 59 seconds slower than my pb of 18months earlier at Silverstone. The course took in the bay, which was a most pleasant memorable stretch, if not a little breezy! This point at about 4 or 5miles also doubled back, allowing you to see your fellow runners - ahead, then those behind. The route also took us through the park, and alongside the castle, but thankfully not into the grounds where there are cobbled paths! Mike had already picked up his bag and filled it with about 10 bottles of free Powerade as I crossed the finishing line....he came in at 1:16.42, knocking almost 4mins off his pb, and securing 33rd place. It was only that evening when looking online at the results that we saw Jude and Jane had also competed. I'm sure they'd agree with us that this was an excellent race and one to recommend.
Bit of a shame that there was no T-shirt in the goodie bag (not that I need another to add to my hundreds, but it's the principle of it you understand...) as this was quite an expensive race to enter, but my tea bag collection has been added to, as his Mike's Nivea for Men collection... |
