Strength and Conditioning Workshop - 22/09/2010

A Coach Development Workshop
University of Warwick Endurance Academy
Strength and Conditioning Training for Endurance Athletes
Date: Wednesday 22 September, 2010
Time: 19:00 – 21:00
Venue Westwood Games Hall, University of Warwick Track

University of Warwick Endurance Academy – Workshop Aim
An opportunity for coaches to consider the benefits of strength training for the runners they coach. The workshop will be lead by Max Jones, the former Performance Director of UK Athletics and strength and conditioning advisor to Paula Radcliffe. At this opening session, Max Jones will consider some of the myths associated with strength training for athletes and then promote that strength and conditioning training should be essential for every athlete seeking to be the best that they can be.

Following this workshop there will be three practical coaching clinics during October where Max will provide guidance on the training programmes that could be implemented in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Athletics club. Each clinic will explore one strength and conditioning area in detail. The three themes to be covered are:

Coaching Clinic 1 - Core exercises for the endurance runner

Coaching Clinic 2 - Developing a club and individual circuits session

Coaching Clinic 3 - Weight Training

The provisional dates for these clinics are Saturday 2, 23 & 30 October between 13:00 – 15:00. Dates and times will be confirmed by the 22 September.

Workshop Leader – Max Jones
Max Jones started working for British Athletics in 1981 as BAAB National Athletics Coach, retiring from UK Athletics in 2005. During this time Max performed numerous roles within the sport including posts such as Chief Coach for Throws and Combined Events, leading coach development in the Midlands and Head Coach to the GB Junior Athletics Team during one of its most successful period in World and European competition. From 1997 through to his retirement in 2005 he was Performance Director of UK Athletics.

Max attended 7 Olympic Games as a GB Team Coach including acting as Head Coach for Team GB at the 2000 & 2004 Olympics. In his “retirement” Max was appointed as Director of Irish Athletics leading the Irish Olympic Team at the 2008 Beijing Games.

He has coached and advised numerous international athletes and while Paula Radcliffe is recognised as one of his more high profile charges, he is well known locally for producing a series of international throwers from Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire athletics clubs.

Max has written extensively across a range of athletics publications and in his spare time “enjoys” playing golf, travelling overseas, and looking after the grandchildren!

Workshop Audience
This course is for UK Athletics Coaches and Leaders in Running Fitness from the athletics and road running clubs that are members of the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire (CSW) Athletics Network or who are considering becoming members of this group. It is also suitable for club volunteers from the CSW Athletics Network who lead on a regular basis club training sessions and are considering moving towards a coaching or Leadership in Running Fitness award.

There will be a maximum of 50 “coaches” for this workshop.

For members of the CSW Athletics Network there will be no cost for this workshop.

Please contact David Dix (details provided below) if you are a coach from outside the CSW Athletics Network and wish to attend. Our first priority for reservation will be to coaches from the CSW Athletics Network

Organisation
Workshop invitation for CSW Athletics Network clubs is via the key endurance contact in each club. David Dix will work with the “key endurance contact” in each CSW Network club to confirm attendance and prioritise places.

As this coaching workshop series extends across 4 dates I am aware that coaches may need to be selective in their attendance, could I ask through your “key endurance contact” you indicate your availability for each session? For the Saturday workshops I am suggesting a timing of 13:00 – 15:00, to accommodate club training sessions which are often held in the morning. I would value your feedback on whether this is the best timing for these October workshop.

To assist in the booking of facilities and the preparation of materials (Max is aiming to produce a series of handouts for each delegate) the closing date for registration will be Monday 13 September. Final instructions for delegates will be circulated after the closing date.

Travel instructions for the University of Warwick are provided at the following web address http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/

University Car Park 12 is next to the track, parking after 18:00 and at the weekends, is free.

UKA Working with clubs

Run in England was created to engage with the 60% or more of people who still do less than 3x30 minutes of exercise per week, and to support those unattached runners who, for one reason or another, have chosen NOT to join a club more effectively.

Race Reports
Gloucester Marathon 22/01/2012

Standing on the start line of the Gloucester Marathon, it struck me that the average runner must sound very sickly to the uninitiated. The waiting room conversation in a doctor's surgery would pale into insignificance alongside the excuses that runners offered up as we awaited the gun - shin splints, lower back pain, flu, hangovers - all trotted out alongside the old favourites of lack of training, too early in the season and so on.

Standing next to Connor Carson of Kenilworth Runners, I thought back to my last visit here a year ago, but couldn't remember much about the course to give any top tips. The only words that sprang to mind were laps, hilly, exhausting. With no confidence-boosting repartee to hand I listened instead to Connor's positioning of this as a training run... for the record, he managed a PB of 2.48.49 and 5th place. Runners may be generally healthy but they are full of bull at times.

This race attracts more than its fair share of "100 Marathon Club" runners, ticking off a race as early as possible in the year. A 50K event also takes place at the same time, adding a 4th lap to the marathon route, and the two races combined add either motivation or confusion depending on your perspective, as faster runners almost always have someone to chase and overtake.

This is a double-edged sword of course. For every pursuer, there is a runner pursued. I found myself among the latter for a couple of laps at mile 14 as a spell of dizziness cost me several places. A couple of gels and some mental games to re-focus and I was back in business as we entered the 3rd lap. Telling myself that this was now only a 10K race, I picked up the pace, or at least it seemed as if I was running faster again. Thankfully, Carolyn was on hand to pass me drinks en route, as the drink stations seemed a long way apart during my bad patch.

I managed to gain more places than I had lost, to stagger home in 16th place, two better than last year, albeit a slightly slower time of 2.59.07 which I put down to a windy day and being a year older. Thank you Fetch for giving me an age-weighted score higher than 2011! (There's always a straw to clutch if you look hard enough).

If anyone fancies a January marathon in 2013, I may even be tempted to come along and do this again.
